CULTURe

Mochi, sweet Japanese rice cakes, is a popular treat widely known as a staple topping, which adds another dimension of texture to desserts with its extremely soft and chewy consistency. Donuts are a concept known to many cultures, but each with their own take. Our rendition takes the American classic fried donut and Japanese sweet mochi rice cakes to introduce a grand fusion hybrid. Mochi donuts are light and fluffy, with an extra complexity of chewy.

During the Japanese Heian period (late 700s – late 1100s), aristocrats often offered mochi in religious Shinto rituals as a “food for the gods”. According to Japanese folktale, many believed that mochi was a symbol of well-being, good fortune, and nobility. Mochi continues to dominate Japanese desserts today as it is versatile in ways it can be prepared.
